Results of GEWR'22
On July 4-5, the 6th Eurasian Business Forum "Green Energy and Waste Recycling" was held in Astana.
GEWR is held annually by the Kazakhstan Association for Waste Management "KazWaste" with the support of the Ministry of Ecology, Geology and Natural Resources of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

Over the past 6 years, the Forum has gained the status of the leading platform in Kazakhstan and the CIS countries and Central Asia for discussing key issues of waste management, green energy and sharing the best global and national practices and competencies in the field of waste management.

More than 170 people took part in the Forum in 2022:
Including deputies of the Mazhilis of the Parliament of the Republic of Kazakhstan and representatives of 5 government bodies:
● Ministry of Ecology, Geology and Natural Resources of the Republic of Kazakhstan
● Ministry of Health
● Ministry of Trade and Integration
● Ministry of National Economy
● Strategic planning and reform agencies

4 departments:
● Zhasyl Damu
● International Green Technologies & Investments Center
● AIFC
● NCA Atameken

Specialists from local executive bodies from 9 regions of Kazakhstan took part in the Forum:
● Mangistau, Karaganda, West Kazakhstan, Pavlodar, Kyzylorda, Atyrau, North Kazakhstan regions and the cities Almaty and Shymkent.

The Forum also included representatives of specialized enterprises for the management of industrial and household waste, industrial enterprises, business associations and other interested parties from 7 countries: Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Germany, Latvia, Great Britain and the USA.

In his welcoming speech, the Minister of Ecology, Geology and Natural Resources of the Republic of Kazakhstan Serikkali Brekeshev emphasized the relevance and importance of the GEWR Forum and noted that work on reforming the waste management system will continue in Kazakhstan.

Therefore, the interaction and cooperation of stakeholders involved in the waste management sector must be strengthened and deepened.

Key conclusions and areas for cooperation:
● Development of regional cooperation in the field of waste management
● Active participation of manufacturers, importers, waste management enterprises in reforming the extended manufacturer obligations system
● Strengthening the activities of local executive bodies in the field of implementation of the requirements of the Environmental Code
● Promotion of ESG principles in the waste management system
● Development of technological solutions in the field of waste processing and disposal
● Removing barriers to the use of recycled materials in the production of products and packaging, including plastic
● Activation of PPP projects in the field of waste management
● Transition to BAT principles in the field of waste management and other issues.

As part of the Forum, the "Waste Management Awards II" public award held, which recognized the achievements of 8 companies among 42 nominees. The winners of the award were determined by an expert commission based on the results of evaluations of submitted applications and assignment of points.

As part of the Forum, B2B meetings were also held between representatives of equipment manufacturing companies in the field of waste management, waste collection and recycling businesses, industrial waste and other interested parties.

Thus, it can be considered that the goal of the Forum, which was to find solutions to stimulate the waste recycling and green energy industry at the national and regional levels, has been achieved.
